It’s been 50 years since Volvo Trucks’ Accident Research Team (ART) started to systematically gather, analyse and act upon real-life data from traffic accidents.
These insights have helped inform the development of safety systems and future vehicle designs as the industry moves towards safer trucks and transport.
ART’s work centres on the passive safety of Volvo trucks. Passive safety is about minimising the consequences of an accident, while active safety is about avoiding or mitigating accidents in the first place.
“Every year 1.35 million people are killed globally in traffic accidents. This is something we take very seriously,” explained Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic and Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks.
She continued: “Investigations by the Accident Research Team contribute valuable insight which ultimately helps give truck drivers a safer working environment and improve traffic safety for all road users.”
Volvo has the right idea. Our roads can only get safer if we learn lessons from what has happened in the past.
