G Sensor: What and How does it work?

G Sensor dashcam

Drivers approaching fast pace in less time due to technical improvements, minor road bumps and accidents are all consequences of the human race.

Vehicle manufacturers are concerned about increasing vehicle safety and reducing unwanted road-related hazards and fatalities. We cannot overestimate how far we’ve come regarding road safety.

But road accidents can & still occur due to human errors. Therefore, G sensors have played a big role in safety advancement, including seat belts and airbags.

This article will guide you to the most vital aspect of road safety and discuss G Sensor and its association with dashcams and functionalities.

What is G Sensor?

G Sensor

A gravity sensor, commonly known as the G Sensor, is an accelerometer on a dashcam to measure precise accelerations. Such accelerations are also known as G-force, which can be detected when sensors can feel an abrupt change in direction.

Such G force can be triggered by braking forcefully, an abrupt collision or another vehicle colliding with you while being held stationary.

When there’s a change detection in direction, the dash camera activates the ‘event mode’ and saves the current footage as a size section on a memory card.

Varying from brand to brand, the dashcam usually saves footage every 10 seconds before passing the event. This help G Sensor record the change in the time between every point of impact for later retrieval.

How does G Sensor work?

As the G Sensor monitors activities from all directions around your vehicle (Including up and down), it can remember the collision for many advantages like data retrieval and insurance.

If the force of the collision is greater than the value preset by the G Sensor, the system instantly switches the dashcam to an ‘event mode’ for the next minute.

After recording the current event, the G Sensor instantly secures the footage and saves it in a memory section. The saved footage can be overwritten by any later footage captured by your dashcam.

Some dashcams alert you with voice messages when an unwanted collision occurs, as the G Sensor initiates the notification if any video is recorded.

Types of moments detected by G Sensor

The most vital moments captured by G Sensors are impact & motion detection, often presented in expensive models exclusively.

  1. Impact detection captures the video by the in-built G Sensor when activated.
  2. Motion detection captures the video by the built-in G Sensor when triggered by an external movement through the video sensor.

The above categories ensure overall vehicle safety and safeguarding on the road.

What are the common triggers of G sensors?

The most common triggers of the G Sensor are vehicle collision, motion detection & impact detection.

How to ensure the G sensor is working?

You can perform a test to examine whether the G Sensor is working through automated screen rotation utilization. If the lettering turns green, the G Sensor will PASS, indicating it’s functioning properly.
